Treatment Philosophy and Training

I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years of experience as a psychotherapist.  I believe that entering into psychotherapy is one of the greatest gifts that we can offer ourselves, and I feel grateful for the opportunity to guide you in this process of healing and change.

My approach is humanistic, client centered, and grounded in Internal Family Systems (IFS), which is a mindfulness-based, trauma sensitive therapy that has gained significant attention in recent years.  This is an approach that recognizes that rather than being a unified whole, every one of us is made up of different "parts", such as over-responsible parts who push us to overwork and neglect needs for rest, impulsive parts that may act out of reactivity without much awareness, and young parts that may hold past hurts, or beliefs about ourselves and the world.  This is a very embodied, somatic practice, in which we get to know and listen to these different parts within, often leading to profound healing of those parts of ourselves that have previously been rejected or seen as the "problem".  It is also a deeply transformative practice for those young parts of ourselves (the inner child), who are holding a history of loss, fear, or unmet needs.  It has been a gift to accompany my clients in this work.

I am also certified in Intuitive Eating, which is a body positive, mindfulness-based approach to working with food and body concerns.  Many of my clients come to therapy seeking to heal longstanding struggles with body image, cycles of dieting and overeating, and to restore trust in their body’s natural rhythms of hunger and fullness.  I also have extensive experience working clients who are seeking to heal around feelings of self-doubt or lack of self-trust, histories of personal loss or trauma, or are in the process of navigating complicated family relationships.

Ultimately, I believe that a supportive, collaborative therapeutic relationship is central to any process of growth and change.  Each person who enters my practice is unique, and I find it important to take the time early on, to explore what is bringing you in now, and what would be most supportive in our work together.  I hope that this can be a healing space for you, where you can settle in and feel deeply heard and known.

Finally, I received my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from UCLA, and my B.A. from Cornell University.  Prior to opening my private practice in 2011, I worked in a variety of treatment settings, including an OCD treatment program, a college student counseling center, and several years on staff at an eating disorder treatment program.  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have with a brief phone consultation, and I look forward to meeting you!
